Claude vs ChatGPT for business: plans, controls, and data

The same, to the dollar, at every tier a small business will look at. Both vendors sell a standard business seat at $20 per month billed annually or $25 monthly, both start at two seats, and both offer a roughly five-times-usage seat at $100 billed annually that mixes onto the same bill as the standard ones.

Two seats as a minimum on both sides matters more to a five-person office than any of the numbers above, because it means a real pilot costs $40 a month rather than a committee decision. Both vendors draw the same line in roughly the same place: identity and roles at the business tier, provisioning and audit at Enterprise. The differences are real but narrow, and they favor different offices.

A small office on either business tier gets sign-on and roles, and gets no audit log. An office whose rules require a per-user audit trail is buying Enterprise on either platform, and that is the point at which the two conversations stop being comparable on a price sheet at all.

ChatGPT Business is ahead on one control that small offices underrate: spend visibility per person and per group, at the business tier rather than at Enterprise. An owner worried about a runaway bill should weight that.

Neither vendor trains on business-tier content by default, and both say so in published documentation rather than in sales conversation. That is the answer to the question most owners actually mean when they ask whether a tool is safe.

The last row matters most to a governance reader. Anthropic documents that history from a local Claude Cowork session sits on the user’s own computer and is not subject to standard retention or central export. That is a genuine gap in an audit story, and an office with retention obligations should either use cloud sessions on Enterprise or write the limitation into its rules. This is where the two products stop matching.

• Claude includes Claude Cowork on every paid plan, from Pro through Enterprise, at no extra charge. You hand it a goal, it works across files and connected tools, and it shows its steps so a person can check the work before it counts.
• Claude includes Claude Code on the same paid plans, which matters to offices with a technical person who will build the workflow rather than describe it.
• ChatGPT Business brings a large catalog of app connectors covering the usual small-business stack, plus GPT controls that let an admin decide which third-party GPTs are reachable.
• ChatGPT Business also carries agentic modes for multi-step work: agent mode from the composer, deep research, scheduled tasks (up to ten active on Business as of August 2026), and workspace agents for repeatable workflows. These are reached from the chat surface rather than as a separate app.
• ChatGPT’s Codex seats are usage-based rather than a flat per-person cost, and OpenAI’s billing documentation states they can no longer be added to new ChatGPT Business workspaces, so a buyer should confirm current availability before planning around them.

Both sides now carry something that works a multi-step job, so the honest difference is packaging rather than capability. Claude puts it in a separate app included on every paid plan; ChatGPT reaches it from the chat surface with a deeper connector catalog behind it. Since price, sign-on, roles, and the no-training default all come out even, the decision rests on three questions that have nothing to do with the vendor.

1. 01Name the first job you want off someone’s desk. If it is a multi-step job across files and tools, weight the bundled agent. If it is faster answers against the tools you already run, weight the connector catalog.
2. 02Read your written policy first. An office that has committed to a per-user audit trail is buying Enterprise on either platform, so price the Enterprise conversation instead of the business tier.
3. 03Settle it on a Tuesday, not on a table. Both minimums are two seats, so running the same real task through both for a month costs under $100 and the answer comes from your own office.

The seat is the small number and the easy decision.
