Claude Cowork, explained for small business

Claude Cowork carries out multi-step work: you describe the result you want, and it reads the files, drafts the documents, and files the output where you told it to. That is the difference from a chat window, where you carry every step yourself and paste text back and forth.

The tasks a small office hands it look ordinary on purpose. A folder of month-end exports becomes one readable summary. A pile of inconsistently named files gets sorted by rules you set once. The routine reply you write ten times a week gets drafted in your voice and held for you to send.

As of August 2026, Cowork can also run tasks on a schedule, work on several things at once, and keep going on long jobs while you do something else. Each run shows its steps, which matters more than it sounds: the review step is where a business keeps control.

The chat window answers questions; Cowork does assignments. Both run the same Claude models. What changes is reach: chat sees what you paste into it, while Cowork can be given supervised access to folders and business tools and then act on them.

Cowork works with files and folders directly, and connects to business tools through connectors: Anthropic names Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Slack, and Amplitude on the product page as of August 2026. The practical rule for a small business is that the document store is the reliable path. If a tool holds your work in Google Drive, SharePoint, or a folder Cowork can reach, Claude can work on it today. Where a direct connector exists, it is tighter; where nothing fits, a custom connection can be built and scoped to exactly what it may touch.

Skills, sub-agents, and plugins are the three ways Cowork gets shaped to a specific business rather than staying generic. All three are included features, not paid add-ons, as of August 2026.

• A Skill is written know-how Claude loads when a task calls for it: your document formats, your checklist, the way your office does the thing. Build one once and the work comes out your way every time.
• A sub-agent is a helper Claude spins up for part of a job, so a large task can be split and worked in parallel instead of in one long pass.
• A plugin bundles tools, knowledge, and workflows into one installable package, which is how a whole setup gets handed to a team rather than rebuilt per person.

For a small business, Skills are the one to remember. An office that builds a small Skills library around its actual work gets output in its own formats and standards; an office that skips this step gets generic drafts it has to reshape by hand.

As of August 2026 the desktop app covers macOS, Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux; the web version is still rolling out and mobile is in beta, so plan around the desktop app for daily work. The other limits are about the work itself:

• Output needs review. Claude drafts well and errs occasionally, and the office rule has to assume both.
• It works on what it can reach. A business whose documents are scattered across personal drives gets less from day one than one with a tidy shared store.
• Adoption is the hard part. The tool takes minutes to install; changing how ten people work takes training and a few weeks of follow-through.
